What the Landfill Takes
Categories of Refuse
When you bring refuse to the landfill we would appreciate that it be separated in your load into categories. The categories are as follows:
- Brush
- Construction Demolition
- Electronic Waste
- Household Hazardous Waste
- Metal, Compost
- Recycling
- Solid Waste
- Tires
All loads must be roped or tarped! This is according to Resolution dated April 1, 1994 passed by the Clay County Board of Commissioners. This was passed to keep roadsides clear of trash and our neighbor's of the landfill happy.
Fees
Fees for not complying are as listed below:
Confinement Fees
- 1st Violation: $10
- 2nd Violation: $50
- 3rd Violation: $100
Minimum Load Charge up to 440 pounds is $10 per load.
Solid Waste
Fee: $46.20/ton
Old furniture, non-hazardous items that can’t be recycled, empty oil containers, empty caulking tubes, empty paint cans and buckets, Styrofoam drink containers, old toys odds and ends found in households and farmyards.
Construction Demolition
Fee: $35.60/ton

Generally any items used to build or construct a house or other structure. No other foreign materials allowed in this section.
Metal
Fee: $46.20/ton
Anything containing refrigerants: freezers, air conditioners, humidifiers, refrigerators are piled separately by the metal
Empty tar buckets, guttering, flashing, stoves, dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, old bed springs, wire, fencing, old feed bunks, cattle drink tanks, large exercise equipment etc. Bicycles are kept separate to be refurbished by the inmates at Ellsworth County Correctional Center and then handed back out into the community, to under privileged families at Christmas time.
Compost - free Food items, spoiled grain, yard and grass clippings, very small twigs are considered compostable. We do not sell or give out any of our compost. It is used at our facility for reseeding of our slopes on our landfill face.
Aluminum
Aluminum is separate from the metal pile. Examples are window framing, aluminum windows and screen doors, barbecue grills, and other aluminum items not including aluminum cans.
Brush
Fee: $35.60/ton
Tree limbs and branches. Anything bigger than 6 inches round
Tires
- All Tires up to 16.5 inches: $3.50
- 16.5 inches up to 24.5 inches Highway Tread: $8.50
- 24.5 inches and up and all off Highway: $18.50
Additional Charge will be added for rim removal on all tires of $4 each
Special Waste
Fee: $63 minimum per load and $63/ton
All Special Waste must be permitted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). Special Waste includes Friable or Non-Friable Asbestos shingles, tile, siding, pipe wrap and ceilings scrapings, powder coat paint, contaminated soils and any other items that require special waste handling. Permits may be obtained at the landfill office or through KDHE Bureau of Waste Management.
