DID YOU KNOW the Clay County Fair is officially underway? The Rodeo will be in the Horse Arena tonight at 8:00pm. Thursday will be the Lion’s Club Barbeque from 5-7pm. The Chamber of Commerce and Clay County Farm Bureau will be having a FREE Watermelon Feed at 7:00. Citizens National Bank will be providing FREE Cotton Candy from 7:00 – 8:30pm. Carnival rides will be open from 6-10pm. And there will be a rodeo at 8:00. Friday the carnival rides will be open from 6-10pm and the Demolition Derby will start at 8pm. Saturday the carnival rides will be open from 6-10pm and the ¾ midget cars and mini truck races will start at 7:30pm. On Sunday, July 26 you can start the day with Cowboy Church at 9am; carnival rides from 1pm – 6pm; Kiddy Tractor Pull at 2:00 (registration starts at 1:00pm); and “The Bubble Man” at 3:15.

DID YOU KNOW that Vintage Schoolhouse Classics will be getting an addition to their vintage gardens? Vintage Schoolhouse Classics is thrilled to announce the addition of The Hayes United Methodist Church to their location. As they begin this new adventure, they invite you to join them on Sunday, August 23 for an Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social. They will have homemade ice cream and all the toppings. This “Come and Go” event will be from 1:00 – 3:00pm and a free will offering will be accepted to go towards the preservation of this charming country church. At 2:00, there will be a ground breaking ceremony and a blessing of the ground. They will be using this church as a non-denominational chapel for wedding ceremonies, funeral services and many other community events. Ice cream will be served in the Grand Gazebo. There will also be a large tent set up for additional gathering or you can enjoy air conditioned comfort in the barn.
DID YOU KNOW armband tickets for unlimited rides at the carnival are available? The Fair Carnival will from 6-10pm Thursday through Saturday and 1-6pm on Sunday. Armbands are available until 5pm now through Saturday at the Fair Office on the fairgrounds for $15. Armbands will also be available at regular price from Great Plains Amusements.

DID YOU KNOW the Rex Theatre will be showing two different movies this weekend? Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaur rated PG will show Friday, at 2:00pm; Saturday at 10:30am and 2:00pm and Sunday at 2:00pm and Transformers Revenge of the Fallen rated PG-13 will show Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 4:00pm. There will be no evening shows because of the Clay County Fair. If you haven’t been to the movies in a while – this weekend will be the perfect time to go. The projector has been fixed and the picture is awesome! Stop by the Rex to enjoy a movie and popcorn with the family. Ticket prices are always a low $5 per person.

DID YOU KNOW that Rotary Club meets every Thursday? Rotary will meet on Thursday, July 23rd at noon at the Clay Center Country Club. The program will be Lisa Seley on behalf of Clay Counts. She will be presenting a program on “40 Developmental Assets”. Through the use of these “Assets” the adolescent behavior of youth are proven to be impacted. This should be a very informative program. The luncheon starts at noon and the public is invited to attend.

DID YOU KNOW It’s time again to invite artists 65 and older to enter their works in the 29th Annual Art is Ageless juried exhibit at Clay Center Presbyterian Manor? Works to be entered for judging must be at Clay Center Presbyterian Manor by Monday, July 27th at 4pm. Those who are discovering art in their senior years are encouraged to enter along with those who have spent a lifetime in artistic pursuits. Art is Ageless showcases works in many mediums from throughout the area. Art is Ageless, a celebration of ART at Presbyterian Manor. Deadline for entries July 27th. Entry forms and information can be picked up at Presbyterian Manor, 924 8th Street, Clay Center, or by contacting Heather Germann or Dawn Langvardt at 785-632-5646. Artists need to have been at least 65 years old when the work was created, and works are to have been completed in the past five years (since January 2004). There are seven categories for various mediums and a general Christmas category. Up to three entries may be made by a single artist with no more than two entries in a single category.

Clay Center Christian Church at 1021 Crawford St. (by Carvers) is having Vacation Bible School from Monday, July 27th though Friday, July 31st from 6pm – 9pm for children ages Pre-K through 6th Grade (grades based on the 2009-2010 school year). DID YOU KNOW it’s time to start thinking about Orange & Black pack? Orange & Black Pack helps CCCMS and CCCHS students as they become active and involved in school activities. Orange & Black Pack cares about all students and supports the overall activities program. Memberships are the main way of being able to financially support these activities. Please consider joining or renewing your membership today. Your name will appear in the fall sports program if received by August 17th. Businesses can also support Orange & Black pack by having a Business Ad Membership for only $200 (deadline August 10). This membership includes a business card or logo ad in the Fall & Winter Sports Programs that are handed out at the door/gate of sports activities. DID YOU KNOW the Clay County Back to School Fair will be August 8th? The 8th Annual Clay County Back to School Fair will be held from 9-11am on Saturday, August 8 at the Clay County Community High School. Income Eligible students in Clay County will receive free school supplies at the fair. The financial guidelines for eligibility are: for a family of two – $26,226; family of 3 – $35,958; family of 4 – $39,690; family of 5 – $$46,422; family of 6 – $53,154; family of 7 – $59,886 and family of 8 – $66,618. Applications are currently available at Pawnee Mental Health Services, the County Health Department and the Head Start office and must be completed and returned by July 31. Fair organizers are also inviting local groups to have booths at the fair so families can get information from them regarding local activities available to children. Questions about the fair may be directed to Becky Guy at the Head Start office at 632-2195.
DID YOU KNOW the Lions Club will be having their 50th Annual Bar-B-Que? The Lion Club Bar-B-Que will be held on Thursday, July 23 from 5-7pm at the Clay County Free Fair – N.G. Armory. They will be serving Bar-B-Que and all the trimmings and handy carry outs will be available. This is their 50th annual event. Tickets are available from any Lions Club Member and all four local banks.
DID YOU KNOW there will be a benefit poker run? A benefit poker run will be held on Saturday, July 25th with registration from 10am to noon at Scooter’s. The last vehicle will be in at 5:30pm. The route will be determined later, but it will finish in Wakefield Park, where camping is available. Entry is $15 per hand and includes a meal at the park. Pay out for best and worse hand. Raffle prizes and auction to follow. All proceeds to go for medical expenses for little Jayden Riane Brooke Taylor, who was born May 6th and passed away on June 20th at Children’s Mercy Hospital.
DID YOU KNOW CCMC Lunch Bunch is meeting Thursday, July 23? Mark your calendars, CCMC Lunch Bunch is meeting Thursday, July 23 from noon – 1pm at Education Centers 1 & 2. Cost for the lunch is $5 and reservations are required. Meet volunteers Audrey Pfizenmaier, Shirley Mackender and Nancy Ryan, also known as blanketeers. They provide new, handmade, washable blankets to be given as gifts to seriously ill and traumatized children, ages 0-18 as part of the Project Linus Mission. Project Linus is comprised of hundreds of local chapters and thousands of volunteers across the United States. Each volunteer and local chapter all work together to help achieve their mission statement, which states: First, it is our mission to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.” And, Second, it is our mission to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children. Together they have distributed over three million blankets to children in need since their inception in 1995. Call the Mark A. Chapman Wellness Center at 632-2144, ext. 427 for reservations.

DID YOU KNOW it is time to sign your kids up for Youth Soccer? Youth Soccer is available for kids who are 4 years old (by Sept 1) through 6th grade. Registration deadline is August 1st, so you will have to sign up kids before school starts. (Be sure and spread the word to friends.) The fee is $17.50 per player with a $35 per household maximum. Checks should be made payable to Clay Center Youth Soccer League. The fee will increase to $22.50 per player AFTER August 1. Shin Guards are required and metal cleats are not allowed. You can pick up an application from the Information Center 517 Court or reply to this email and I will forward you a printable copy. DID YOU KNOW the 16th Annual Clay County Relay for Life is scheduled for Friday, August 21? If you would like to volunteer to help organize this amazing event, please consider joining the committee. They can never have too many volunteers. Please also consider having a team for the event. Teams consist of 8 to 15 people who are willing to walk throughout the night (12 hours). There are also special ceremonies honoring cancer survivors and those who have died of cancer. The theme for this years event is “Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back.” Since about one in three Americans will get cancer sometime during their lifetime, events like this are even more important to help fund a cure. The first five ducks to cross the finish line will have an opportunity to win a new Colorado pickup truck from Green team of Clay Center, Inc. 1st place wins $500 cash; 2nd place – ½ hog; 3rd place – Stay at Topeka Holiday Inn; 4th place – $50 in gas; 5th place – Meal for Two at Danny’s Grill & Catering. The Great Republican River Duck Race will be held at 2pm on Saturday, July 25 and 1,000 ducks must be sold to qualify for the truck. DID YOU KNOW by saving certain labels you help our schools? Although school’s out of the summer, you should continue to save Campbell’s Soup Labels (the UPC code), General Mills Box Tops for Education and Nestle Pure Life water labels. By saving these labels you help our local school earn money for various projects in the school system. Please make a point to cut the labels and save them to help a worthy cause. If you don’t have school aged children, you can still save them and drop them off at the grocery store or stop by the Information Center at 517 Court and we will get them where they need to go.
