DID YOU KNOW that Clay Center’s SPRING CLEANUP is scheduled for the week of March 30? Residents of Clay Center will be able to take advantage of a free spring cleanup when the city begins the annual event on March 30. Beginning at the north end of town crews will make a one time pick up of items as they move to the south end. Items to be picked up should be located at the same place where regular trash is placed for pick up.

The following items will NOT be taken: tires, batteries, antifreeze, oil and paint. ALL items must be separated in like item piles, such as metals in one pile and scrap lumber in another. Items that are not separated will NOT be picked up. Instead those items will be tagged and the responsible party will be subject to a citation from the police department. Questions regarding cleanup may be directed to city hall at 632-5454.

DID YOU KNOW the landfill is also offering Spring Cleanup? During the week of March 30th the Clay County Landfill is allowing county residents to bring their own cleanup items to the landfill at no charge. Questions concerning the free week at the landfill may be directed to 632-2487.

DID YOU KNOW the 67th Annual Stardusters Concert has been set? The 67th Annual Stardusters Concert will be presented at 7:30pm on Friday, March 27 in the Martyn-Snodgrass Auditorium. This year the program will include music from the 1970s performed by CCCHS band students. Approximately 40 band members plus the Tiger Chorale will be performing in the concert. Anthony Meals and Alex Moore will serve as emcees for the evening. Tracy Lebo, CCCHS art instructor, and first-hour statecraft class are designing the set and all arts classes will be assisting. Reserved tickets are available in advance at Mayors until March 27 for $4. Tickets at the door the night of the concert will be $5.

DID YOU KNOW advance voting is available at the County Clerk’s office? Advance voting started last week and is available until Monday, April 6 at noon. If you would like to vote for City Council members and school board members early, you can do so by stopping by the Clerk’s office at the Court House. DID YOU KNOW that the Clay Center Pilot Club is taking orders for geraniums? You can order red, white or pink geraniums for $3.50 each to be delivered April 22. Call any member of call 632-5390 to order a geranium today. The Pilot club meets at Maury’s on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month from noon to 1:00pm and welcome visitors and new members.

DID YOU KNOW that a fundraiser is being planned for Julie Hillman? A fundraiser is scheduled at Ray’s Apple Market on Thursday March 26 and Friday, March 27 from 11:00am to 7:00pm and Saturday, March 28 from 11:00am to 2:00pm. They will be serving hamburgers 2 for $4.00. Julie Hillman was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor in 2006 and is still suffering from other related health issues and can no longer work. If anyone wishes to help with the fundraiser, or donate an item to the auction, they can contact Linda Underwood at 785-632-0369 or 785-632-6233.

DID YOU KNOW Commodities will be distributed in Longford? The Longford United Methodist Church will distribute commodities at 5:30pm on Wednesday, March 25 for people in the Longford, Oak Hill and Industry areas. If you think you might qualify, call 388-2158 before March 25 or the Longford Church at 388-2438 before 11am on Wednesday. Those who qualify cannot have monthly income exceeding $1,127 for the first person in the household, or that plus $390 for every person beyond the first. Commodities that will be available include peaches, peanut butter, raisins, spaghetti sauce, applesauce, grapefruit juice, great northern beans, mixed fruit and canned carrots.

DID YOU KNOW a “Thank You” Tea is being held at the Wakefield Museum? A “Thank You” Tea for volunteers and friends of the museum will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, March 25 at the Wakefield Museum, 604 6th Street. The tea will feature a presentation on the newly established Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area by the organization’s treasurer, Judy Billings. The organization covers an area composed of 41 counties in western Missouri and eastern Kansas.

DID YOU KNOW that Clay County Recycling pick up will be Saturday, April 4? The Clay County Recycling Truck will be at the following locations and times:

Morganville: Saturday, April 4 from 8-9am on Main Street in front of the café Green: Saturday, April 4 from 9:15-9:45am on Main Street in front of City Hall Wakefield: Saturday, April 4 from 10:30am-12:30pm on the north side of the ball park

Absolutely NO household hazardous waste will be accepted at any of the recycling pick up locations.

DID YOU KNOW the ultimate garage sale is happening in Clay Center? This is a combination of many families, there will be something for everyone. NO early sales. Saturday, March 28th from 8am – 2pm at Lincoln School Lunchroom – 1020 Grant.

DID YOU KNOW dates have been set for the Clay County Fair? July 22 through July 26 are the dates for the 2009 Clay County Fair, according to the Fair Board. The rodeo will be held on Wednesday (22nd) and Thursday (23rd) this year. A demolition derby is set for the fairground grandstand the evening of Friday, July 24 and Jayhusker Races are slated for Saturday, July 25. The carnival will run from the 23rd thru 26th. The Fair’s Gospel Sing will be held Sunday, July 19th at the United Methodist Family Life Center.

DID YOU KNOW CCMC is offering Childbirth Education Classes? The childbirth education classes are offered one night a week for 4 weeks. Sessions last 2-3 hours each. This class is free of charge. All expecting mothers and support persons are welcomed. This course covers a variety of topics including: signs of labor, stages of labor, breathing and relaxation techniques, pain management, postpartum care, care of infant after delivery and infant CPR. Class begins at 7 p.m in the Education Centers. Dates are: March 31, April 7, April 14 and April 21. To sign up call 785-632-3929, ext. 406.

DID YOU KNOW that Clay Counts is hosting a Clay County Town Hall Meeting? Come find out what Clay Counts is doing to decrease underage drinking in Clay County! John Bitinas, Director of Drug Education, Narcanon Arrowhead in SW Oklahoma will be the guest speaker at the Clay County Town Hall Meeting, plus there will be information on Clay Counts programs & initiatives. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 7, 2009. A light meal will be provided at 6:15pm with the program following at 7:00pm at the Clay Center United Methodist Church – Family Life Center (5th & Clarke) Everyone is encouraged to attend & child care will be available

DID YOU KNOW there is a burn ban in Clay County? The commissioners implemented a burn ban in Clay County effective March 3. If will be in effect for 30 days.

DID YOU KNOW Rotary meets every Thursday? Rotary will meet on Thursday, March 26 at noon at the Clay Center Country Club. The guest speaker will be Dennis Sewell who will be discussing his recent trip to Saudi Arabia. . The luncheon starts at noon and the public is invited to attend.

DID YOU KNOW the Chamber of Commerce meets every Wednesday morning for coffee? The program will be City Council Candidates. The meeting will be at 8am at the Education Center at CCMC. Sponsored by Clay County National Bank and Clay County Medical Center.

DID YOU KNOW that Clay County Medical Center’s Lunch Bunch will meet on Thursday, March 26 at noon in the Education Centers? Guest speakers will be Dr. Rick Hammel, Nancy Hammel and Kelli Kidder. They spent a week in Belize last November with the Belize Mission Project donating dental services. While there they saw well over 100 patients over the course of four days. This is the second time Dr. Hammel and Nancy have traveled to Belize with the Belize Mission Project but this was the first time for hygienist, Kelli Kidder.
