DID YOU KNOW the proposed statewide clean indoor air act, SB 25 is in play? This bill would allow public areas to be smoke free. If you would like to see the full text of SB 25, click here: http://www.kslegislature.org/bills/2010/25.pdf If you support the Clean Indoor Air Act, SB 25, you should contact your state Senator and urge him or her to support SB 25. The hearings were last week, and it looks like it will make it out of the committee sometime this week. In a state where only 20% of the population smokes, it is an important bill. If you need to find out who your Senator is, go to this link and put in your address: http://www.ipsr.ku.edu/ksdata/vote/ and click on Find my elected official – then click on your county – and your representatives will appear on the right side of the screen. DID YOU KNOW that the Clay County Wrestling Club will be hosting their annual invitational wrestling tournament, the Greg Grater Classic? Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 14th. Approximately 450 wrestlers from across the State of Kansas, along with their families will be spending the day at the Clay Center Community High School. Usually with each wrestler, comes a Mom & Dad, a sibling or two, and several grandparents and coaches! A concession stand will be available throughout the entire day (biscuits & gravy, donuts, burritos, fried chicken, bbq pork or ham sandwiches, just to name a few)

DID YOU KNOW there are some English Mastiff Puppies available for sale? Deb Christiansen has 7 English Mastiff Puppies that will be ready the first week of March. DID YOU KNOW there is a Clay Center Area Chamber of Commerce Coffee this week? The speaker will be a representative from Lighthouse for Christ. The coffee starts at 8:00 AM and is open to the public. This month’s coffees are sponsored by the Clay County National Bank and Clay County Medical Center. The public is encouraged to attend.

DID YOU KNOW the Clay Center Youth Basketball Association will be hosting two youth tournaments? The Clay Center Youth Basketball Association will be hosting another youth tournament that will be bringing 64 teams to Clay Center. The boys tournament was Saturday – did you notice extra people?? The girls tournament (The Nicole Ohlde Basketball Classic) is on Saturday, February 7th. A total of 48 games will be played each day. Clay Center will have five boys teams and four girls teams in the tournament. Clay Center will likely grow by 800 – 1,000 people on these two days. Businesses – BE PREPARED – and encourage your employees to make a good 1st impression!! All proceeds from the tournament will be used to provide equipment and playing opportunities for youth involved in this program.

DID YOU KNOW Rotary meets every Thursday at noon? The Rotary Club meets every Thursday at noon at the Country Club. The guest speaker this Thursday, February 5 is Maribeth Kieffer is a Development Coordinator for Youthville. The Rotary Club recently donated book bags to Youthville. Guests are welcome and encouraged to attend.

DID YOU KNOW that CCEEA recently held it’s annual meeting? CCEEA (Clay County Educational Endowment Association) is a private 501c3 foundation which exists to provide a means by which persons can donate funds to be funneled to educational projects and scholarships. A review of the year’s accomplishments included 18 scholarships awarded, support of the “My Own Book” Project in Clay County Schools, contributions toward the Back-To-School Fair and six teacher mini-grants to Clay County teachers for classroom use. A total of $44,750 was expended for these scholarship and programs in 2008. Persons interested in joining CCEEA or making a tax-deductable donation should contact the offices of Ryan & Mullen in Clay Center.

DID YOU KNOW that the Community Chamber Orchestra is preparing its second and final “Agriculture and the Arts” multi media event? This events will be presented twice on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 4:30 and 7:00 pm at the Clay Center Rex Theater. This year’s show will feature over 600 digital photographs of Clay County farming and community life, shown on the movie screen as the Orchestra plays a wide selection of American popular music. Tickets are $5/person or $13/family. Anyone can submit photos to be in the show, to Jim Beck at usbank@kansas.net until March 1, 2009. Also individuals, organizations, and businesses can sponsor a framed photograph from this year’s event to be place in a local business or public location as the permanent photography exhibit. For a donation of $100 or more, Individuals and organizations can donate through the Clay County Arts Council, and businesses can donate as advertising directly to Community Chamber Orchestra, and will receive the photograph for their business location and credit on the Orchestra website under “Sponsors.” Orchestra musicians are youth through adults, and play without a conductor. DID YOU KNOW that the 29th Annual KCLY Spring Fair date has been set? Mark your calendars for Friday, April 24 from 10am to 8pm at the National Guard Armory in Clay Center. This show is intended for store front businesses and home based businesses. Booths are available now. You can obtain booth registration information from www.kclyradio.com and click on Spring Fair. DID YOU KNOW that you can become a Friend of the Rex? By becoming a “Friend of the Rex” you can receive $1 off the regular price of a movie AND receive one FREE family sized popcorn each visit. One person can join at the “People’s Choice” level of only $25; Two people can join at the “Tony” level for $50; a family can join at the “Emmy” level for $250 and if you are a big supporter of the Rex and want to see other improvements or help sponsor a movie – you can join at the “Oscar” level for $500. Of course, the Friends of the Rex would also accept donations of ANY amount. This is a great way to support our local theatre, so we can keep this family fun form of entertainment available in Clay County. DID YOU KNOW it is time to renew your dog tags? All dogs living in the Clay Center city limits are required to be licensed. The cost is only $1 for male dogs or spayed females and $2 for un-spayed female dogs now through February 28th. On March 1, the cost increases by $1 for each animal. You must provide your certificate of rabies vaccination when you get the tags. Stop by City Hall to license your dogs now.
