DID YOU KNOW There was extensive damage from the flood water that ravished many homes in Clay County on June 1st and 2nd. Some help has been available to families through the Salvation Army, and the Lighthouse for Christ, but not enough to help many of the families who were affected. The damage varied from some who lost a few things and endured the cleanup process to those who lost all their possessions, had water up to the floor joists, and had basement walls cave in. We were approached by several people in the community to do a fundraiser for one individual who lost all she had in the raging flood waters, but felt that we couldn’t do that for one family when so many in our community suffered loss. In saying that, after many prayers and discussions with several pastors, civic groups, and other concerned citizens, it was decided to do a county-wide fundraiser to try to help all who were affected by this disaster.
A fundraiser is being held at Ray’s Apple Market on Thursday, August 4th & Friday, August 5th from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We will be serving pulled pork sandwiches for $2 each. On Friday, August 5th beginning at 1:00 p.m., we will hold an on-air auction on KCLY 100.9 FM. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Cares in Regions Chapter is graciously donating $2,000 to help the flood damage families. In addition, $50 will be donated to this cause for each vehicle taken for a test drive at Hanson Ford from Monday, August 1st through Saturday, August 6th. $100 will be donated for each vehicle purchased at Hanson Ford during this time, as well. The money raised from this event will be given to the Lighthouse for Christ to hand out to those who had damage from the June flood waters. This money will be earmarked for flood damage families, and will be used locally to help those in need. An emphasis will be made to help those who lost furnaces, hot water heaters, and had basement walls collapse. There are no administrative costs associated with the money collected; all money will stay in our community to help families in our area. In order to receive help, a family member will visit with a pastor in our community who will make a recommendation to the Lighthouse for Christ Board, an application will be filled out, and the money will be distributed accordingly. Anyone wishing to make a donation to this fundraiser can do so by sending it to: Lighthouse for Christ, P. O. Box 231, Clay Center, Ks 67432-0231 and writing “flood damage” on the memo line or sending it to: Lighthouse for Christ, %Linda Underwood, 1729 Hackberry Road, Clay Center, Ks 67432-7824. Anyone wishing to help with this fundraiser or donate an item to the auction is encouraged to call Linda Underwood at 785-632-0369 (cell) or 785-632-6233 (home) after 6:00 p.m. Please give this fundraiser your prayerful consideration as many families in our community were affected by this storm. Thanking you in advance for your participation in this event, and looking forward to seeing you there.
