DID YOU KNOW Clay Center area residents are being asked to help the hungry and donate to the annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive across America on Sat., May 14th. City & Rural Carriers alike will be picking up food items for this drive. All the food collected goes to The Lighthouse for Christ which provides meals for the needy throughout the year. Postal customers wishing to donate food items should put them in a plastic bag and leave the bag of food items by your mailbox, before mail delivery on Saturday, May 14th. Food items should be non-perishable such as dried, canned and packaged products. Items most needed by food banks are canned meats, soup, fruits and vegetables; and packaged non-perishables with lots of protein/carbohydrates such as pasta, cereal, powdered milk and vegetables. Every 1.3 lbs. of food donated equates to one meal according to food bank officials. “With the continued difficult economy, many more people are hungry and struggling to feed their families. The food drive is a great opportunity for us all to give something so important to those who most need it,” said Morris Weyant, Postmaster. The Clay Center Post Office will also have a food drive bin set up in its lobby on Sat., May 14th, and every day of that week before, so customers can drop off their canned and non-perishable food items throughout the week beforehand.
DID YOU KNOW The General Federation of Women’s Club (GFWC) of Clay Center will be sponsoring a walk or bike to school and work day on Friday, May 13, weather permitting. We are doing this in an effort to conserve energy during these difficult economic times. If you live three miles or less from your place of work and/or school join us on this endeavor. From those who could not walk or bike, we ask them to consider other ways to save energy such as car pooling, combining trips, turning their cars off when stopping for longer than one minute, removing extra weight from their cars, and driving at no more than 60 mph on the highway. According to the Department of Energy, driving at 55 mph could improve gas mileage by up to 23%. (www.fueleconomy.gov)
Simple measures like this, by all of us will go a long way in reducing our energy consumption, our carbon foot print, and keeping gas prices under control. Thank you for your support as we all enjoy healthy walks and bike rides.Geri Meals on behalf of all Clay Center GFWC members.
