DID YOU KNOW the Post Office is selling stamps for Breast Cancer Awareness? With October being breast cancer awareness month, Morris Weyant, Clay Center Postmaster, has again challenged the employees at our local post office to sell 3,000 breast cancer stamps by the end of October.  If we can sell 3,000 stamps, Morris Weyant, Kent Chestnut, and Brad Cooper will shave their heads in recognition of this accomplishment.  The breast cancer stamps sell for $.55 each with $.11 going for breast cancer research.  A couple of years ago, Morris challenged his employees to sell the 843 breast cancer stamps we had in stock at that time, and we sold close to 2,000 then.  We had quite a crowd at the post office that morning when Helen Kosman shaved his head.   While we only have three weeks to achieve these sales, we’re confident that we can attain our goal.  Looking forward to seeing you there.

New This Week!

Butch Hartley moved to Clay Center in 1973.  He found a small, quiet town he liked, and decided to make it his home.  He worked at GT Manufacturing, Hutchinson/Mayrath, as well as various construction jobs before opening his own business, Butch’s Body Shop.  He owned and operated the business in Clay Center for 26 years before he had to medically retire, due to lung damage resulting in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).  In 2004, Butch had his first of seven heart attacks.  In 2008, he would be life flighted to Wichita where he received emergency open heart surgery.  He had been out of surgery two weeks when one of his bypassed arteries plugged up, resulting in another life flight to Wichita.  His doctors were successful in keeping him going, but little did he know he would have a long road ahead of him.  He has never properly healed from the surgery.  His sternum is still unhealed; he has to be careful to avoid further injury.  After seeing many specialists, it has been determined it will be something he has to deal with for the rest of his life. In August of 2011 after battling weeks of sickness and bouts of pneumonia, Butch was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer in both lungs.  He has been receiving radiation five days a week and chemotherapy one day a week.  He travels to Manhattan every morning for treatment where he has weekly consultations from the doctors, has blood drawn, and endures various other tests.  He must have the blood work done once a week to check his platelet level since it has to remain at a certain level in order to receive his treatments.  If it does not remain high enough, he must add another day to his treatment schedule.  Butch is scheduled to have 39 radiation treatments and 9 chemotherapy treatments. His wife, Gloria, had to give up her job to care for Butch.  He is weak, and must have somebody with him at all times.  She drives him to his appointments every day.  The only source of income the couple has at this time is their social security checks that only come once a month.  Butch has Medicare coverage that pays for a percentage of his medical treatments, but it doesn’t cover everything.  They would greatly appreciate any help that could be given to assist in the expense of traveling and the remaining medical bills that Medicare does not cover. Butch is in good spirits taking things one day at a time.  His doctors are hopeful that they can get this into remission.  He jokes with the doctors about getting him well so he can go elk hunting, and his radiation doctor has promised that.  It helps keep him motivated, and all the help he receives is greatly appreciated. A fundraiser has been planned at Ray’s Apple Market on Thursday, Oct. 20 and Friday, Oct. 21 from 11:00AM. to 7:PM and on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 11:00 AM. to 2:00 PM.  We will be serving Kretchmar hot dogs for $1.50 each.  There will also be an on-air auction on 100.9 FM KCLY beginning at 1:00PM on Friday, Oct. 21.  Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Republican River Chapter #30307 is graciously providing $750 in matching funds for this event.  All proceeds raised from this fundraiser will be used for medical and travel expenses. Anyone wishing to make a donation to help Butch is encouraged to send it to:  Butch Hartley, %Clay County National Bank, P. O. Box 260, Clay Center, Ks  67432-0260.  Anyone wishing to help with this fundraiser or make a donation to the auction is encouraged to call Linda Underwood at 785-632-0369 (cell) or 785-632-6233 (home) after 6:00 p.m.  Please keep Butch and his family in your prayers as they continue to fight this deadly disease.  Thanking you in advance for your participation in this fundraiser.  Looking forward to seeing you there.
